Jaco Pastorius / The Birthday Concert

1981年12月1日、ジャコの故郷フロリダ州フォートローダーデイルのクラブ「Mr. Pip’s」で行われた30歳の誕生日を祝うライヴ音源（ウェザー・リポート時代の盟友ピーター・アースキン（ds）が保管していたもの）ジャコの死から8年後の1995年にリリースされた。スティール・パンとをメインに据えた総勢22名のビッグ・バンドの演奏となっている。

聞き所はビッグバンド・スタイルがばっちりハマる#1《Soul Intro/The Chicken》、#3《Invitation》、#5《Liberty City》、#8《Reza》、#9《Domingo》など。本作にはマイケル・ブレッカー（ts）が参加しているが、彼がこのバンドで演奏したもので公式なリリース音源は本作しかない。また、その後このバンドの音楽監督を務めたボブ・ミンツァー（ts）とのツイン・テナーの聴き比べも面白い。#10《Band Intro》でご機嫌なジャコの声が聞かれるのも本作ならでは。

このライヴ盤は実に音質が良い。ホールコンサートではなく小さなナイト・クラブで行われたライブなので、目の前で演奏が繰り広げられているような迫力がある（ライブ当日はステージの音源を隈なく拾えるよう24トラック・レコーダーを積んだ車が横付けされていた）。CDのライナーによると、この日ライブは2時間ずつ2セット行われたという。

この年ジャコは6月にスタジオ録音のセカンドアルバム『Word of Mouth』をリリース。このバースデイ・ライヴの翌年の1982年6月にニューヨークのクール・ジャズ祭、9月には日本のオーレックス・ジャズ祭に出演しており、本作はそれより半年以上早いワード・オブ・マウス・ビッグ・バンドの実質的な旗揚げ公演となった。
